With bamboo floors and geothermal heating, Prairie Crossing Charter School in Grayslake, Ill., has joined a number of suburban Chicago construction projects registered for the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification, according to a report in the Chicago Daily Herald.
Prairie Crossing’s new 14,000-square-foot building, which opened to its student population of first through fifth graders on Jan. 3, was constructed at a cost of nearly $3 million, according to the paper.
With an increasing number of projects like the charter school, Chicago and its surrounding suburbs are among leading areas seeking the USGBC’s seal of approval on green construction.
The Chicago Daily Herald reports that 72 projects throughout the state of Illinois are registered under the LEED rating system, and more than half of them are in Chicago.
