Energy Costs Force Temporary Closure of Canadian Wallboard Plant

The Federal Gypsum Co. in Nova Scotia will close for one month.

The Federal Gypsum Co. in Point Tupper, Nova Scotia, has announced that it will close for one month and lay off staff because of high natural gas prices, according to a report in the Canadian Press (Colchester County, Nova Scotia).

Company officials report increasing energy prices have significantly raised production and delivery costs and that current market conditions prevent them from passing those increases along to their customers.

A small crew will remain to ship wallboard that has already been produced.
