Diversco Gets Go-Ahead on Concrete Recycling Permit

Diversco Construction Co. has received unanimous approval by the city of Grand Rapids, Mich., Planning Commission for a special use permit to operate a concrete crushing/recycling operation at its facility in Grand Rapids. The company will now need to receive a permit from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality before it can begin processing concrete at the site.

The company will be moving some equipment it presently has and use that at the site, although it will not likely be on a regular basis. A spokesman for the company says they will likely store concrete at the site until they obtain enough to perform crushing operations. The company has undertaken concrete crushing at its other locations.

Under the county decision, the company can begin concrete recycling at the site as soon as Nov. 7, 2009, although the company is unlikely to begin the operations that quickly.

One advantage the company noted in its request to allow it to crush concrete at the site would be the ability to reduce the amount of truck traffic delivering the concrete to one of Diversco’s other locations outside Grand Rapids.

The concrete that is crushed would be used as a base for some of Divesco’s roadwork construction.

The company has owned the facility in Grand Rapids for around four years.
