The City of Detroit Economic Development Corporation has awarded a joint venture of MCM Management, Inc. and The Farrow Group, Inc. the job of tearing down part of Tiger Stadium to make way for a proposed mixed use of recreational, educational, commercial and residential development while retaining the ability to demolish the entire stadium if necessary. Both firms have considerable experience in the demolition of buildings.

Since the materials used to build the stadium have value to recyclers, the MCM/Farrow Joint Venture expects to do its work at no cost to the City. The proposal the EDC approved gives the City several options:

• If the stadium is selectively dismantled, there will be no cost to the City of Detroit.

• If the stadium is completely removed (with certain conditions), the MCM/Farrow Joint Venture will pay the EDC $300,000 to be used to redevelop the site.

Meanwhile, a group that seeks to preserve memorabilia from Tiger Stadium hopes to obtain commitments for the restoration and construction, and additional financing to operate a portion of the stadium. The Old Tiger Stadium Conservancy’s plan to preserve the stadium’s playing field for youth and neighborhood recreation and to preserve a portion of the old stadium structure for a museum was included in an EDC Project Plan approved by the Detroit City Council last July.
