Residents are calling for the city of Denver to implement new rules for demolition preparation after a rat infestation, a report by Fox31 Denver says. The rodents appeared after the demolition of a vacant property around May.
One resident, Keith Urstadt, says he has lived in the south Denver neighborhood for 12 years without seeing a rat, but now he sees groups of 15 to 20 rodents in the street per night.
Urstadt says he has killed at least 50 rodents since the demolition. He told Fox31 Denver that he wants the issue to encourage the city to fumigate a building prior to tearing it down.
The Denver Department of Environmental Health will send staff to the neighborhood to advise residents on how to handle rodent infestations. The city says residents should contact an attorney if they want to recoup losses from the infestation.
