Officials in Washington city force bridge demolition location change

Workers will barge material from the Lake Washington instead of using demolition site in Kenmore.

The demolition of Kenmore, Washington's SR 520 bridge will be moved out of the city and onto nearby Lake Washington, a report from local news station King5 says.

The city hired contractor Kiewit/General/Manson (KGM). The company and the city were in the middle of a legal dispute over where the old bridge would be taken apart after city officials said it could not be done at the Lakepointe industrial site in Kenmore.

According to King5, the agreement says KGM will not break down concrete from the bridge, but the demolition work will take place on barges within 1,000 feet of the new bridge on Lake Washington. The materials will be transported in the barges to the city, where it will be transferred to trucks and transported out of the city. The agreement also sets rules about work hours, noise levels, dust control and weight limits, the report says.

Residents of the city are concerned with the impact this route will have on the lake, the report says. Allegedly, there are possible toxins that could be in the debris from the bridge.

According to King5, the demolition work will run from now through the end of the year.
