Demolition of the Fenton Art Glass plant and gift shop in Williamstown, Ohio, is set to begin Dec. 4, a report by the Marietta Times says. The plant will be replaced with the new Williamstown-Waverly Elementary School.
Reclaim Co., Fairmont, West Virginia, will demolish the plant. George Fenton, president of Fenton Art Glass, says in the report the demolition should take around four months.
Crews will begin inside the building Dec. 1, conducting asbestos abatement and other interior demolition, the report says. Demolition of the structure will take place after Jan. 1.
Fenton Art Glass was established in 1905. The report says the plant was built in 1907. Plans to close the plant were announced in 2007 and Fenton Art Glass ceased operations July 2011. Wood County Schools purchased the property surrounding the plant and plans to buy the property the plant once stood on after demolition is complete, the report says.
Mike Fling, assistant superintendent for Wood County Schools, says in the report a bid for the new elementary school construction will be put out in January. The demolition and construction are able to happen simultaneously because the majority of the school will be placed on the Fenton gift shop and factory parking lot.
