Demolition planned for former Smith Carriage Co. building in Massachusetts

A 9-month hold on the plans has elapsed and the developer plans to go forward with the project.

A Massachusetts developer plans on moving forward with the demolition of a building that is more than 100 years old after a nine month hold by the city has elapsed, a report by masslive.com says. Louis Masaschi of Longmeadow plans on building a $17 million hotel on the site in Springfield.

The hold came about after Masaschi applied for a demolition permit in April 2016 that was denied by Springfield’s Historical Commission because it was not exempt from the city’s demolition delay ordinance designed to protect historically significant building more than 100 years old, the report says. The ordinance encourages developers to look for reuses of the building before demolishing.

Masaschi told masslive.com he considered loft apartments, but the cost to remodel the dilapidated building rather than demolishing it “didn’t make sense.” The report says the building has been vacant for more than 40 years.

The building is located diagonally across the $950 million MGM Springfield casino construction project. According to the report, Masaschi is planning a five-story, 112 Home2 Suites Hilton hotel.

According to Springfield Preservation Trust Board of Directors President Donald Courtemanche, the building was used by Smith Carriage Co. in the 1800s to building carriages and later automobile parts in the 1920s.
