Demolition Nearing for Canadian Mill

Domtar preparing a Saskatchewan paper mill for demolition.

Paper manufacturer Domtar is planning to demolish its dormant pulp mill in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Canada, according to an online report from the Saskatchewan News Network.

According to the report, a Domtar news release was issued in late December that says the Montreal-based company plans to “continue to remove machinery and equipment from the site and (would) take steps to engage the services of demolition contractors and file for a demolition permit.”

The demolition work could start in early 2010, says the report.

According to the Saskatchewan News Network, the mill has been closed since 2006, but in June of 2009 Domtar, the government of Saskatchewan and Ottawa-based Iogen Corp. signed a letter of intent to explore using the property to produce cellulosic ethanol made from straw.

The Saskatchewan News Network says a Domtar spokesperson contacted was uncertain whether all or only parts of the pulp mill are scheduled to be demolished or whether the demolition negates any future arrangements between Iogen and Domtar.

The paper machine and converting equipment at the site were removed last year, while additional equipment continues to be removed before demolition work begins.
