Demolition Crews Have Difficulty Bringing Down Roof of Pittsburgh Arena

Work has begun on the demolition of “The Igloo,” the 28-acre site that was once the home of the Pittsburgh Penguins hockey team. According to several reports, crews are working to bring down the roof of the Civic Arena, which is divided into eight sections or leaves. Crews successfully brought down the first section of roof on Jan. 28, but the second section has been more difficult to break free.

Demolition crews have reportedly made several attempts to bring down the second section of roofing, but have not been successful. They are expected to make another attempt the first week of February. They are reportedly planning to remove one section of roof per week.

Demolition of the site is expected to be complete by the end of April or early May to make way for a residential, office and commercial development which the Pittsburgh Penguin organization has proposed.
