Demolition on a 20-year-old shopping center in Olathe, Kansas, is beginning, a report from KMBC-TV says. The Great Mall of the Great Plains is a 1 million square foot retail area that the report says created hopes of becoming a shopping destination for the region.
The mall opened right as shopping centers switched from indoor malls to big box stores and outdoor shopping complexes, the report says.
Contractors have been salvaging what C&D debris they can from the inside and outside of the mall. Jeff Smith, a developer for VanTrust Real Estate, told KMBC-TV that the debris and Freon in the cooling untis will be reused.
According to the report, it will take around six months for the building to be demolished. The future of the property has yet to be determined.
