Demolition began on an elementary school in Fairfield, Ohio, June 19 as part of a project to replace the old building with new schools that will open in September, a report by the Cincinnati Enquirer says.
The demolition of Central elementary school is scheduled to take two weeks. Demolition crews began by removing any objects that contain asbestos, such as window caulking and chalkboards that were glued to walls. Several windows were removed and a laminated apple was found hanging from a second-floor classroom.
A crewmember also found a brass marker in a corner where the building was expanded and a possible time capsule container that will be given to school officials.
According to the report, crews will remove any items that can’t go to a construction and demolition (C&D) debris landfill for recycling and a track excavator will tear down the school section by section, starting with the south end of the building.
The replacement buildings will cost $80 million and add a sixth elementary school to the district.
