According to an article from The Associated Press (AP), the demolition of Giants Stadium began Feb. 4, 2010, in East Rutherford, N.J.
Gramercy Group, a Westbury, N.Y.-based demolition company, is performing the more than $10 million demolition project, which will take about four months to complete, according to the AP report.
Vincent Parziale, CEO of Gramercy, says in the article that the stadium cannot be imploded because it is too close to the new stadium which was built adjacent to the existing one. He says the company will clean out the old Giants Stadium from the inside out before taking the building down in sections, working from high to low.
Seats and sod from the field will be sold as memorabilia, while much of the concrete resulting from the demolition work will be used to fill a 14-foot hole where the field is currently located, the article notes.
"We're demolishing a piece of history," says Frank Amicizia, Gramercy VP, in the AP report. "We're just happy to be the ones doing it, especially being a New York-based contractor."
The 34-year-old stadium was previously host to the National Football League’s New York Giants and New York Jets. AP
