Dem-Con Companies has announced that its shingle processing yard is open to contractors and roofers. “We believe that an integrated solid waste management system and sustainable environmental practices are integral to the future of the industry,” says Chris Guillemette, vice president, business development, Dem-Con Companies. “By opening our shingle yard, we deliver options for contractors and developers to recycle and recover materials they wish to discard, while offering the value-added benefits of reduced tip rates and LEED credits.”
The Shakopee, Minn., shingle processing yard opened in early May 2010. Asphalt shingles brought to the yard will be recycled and used in roadways as a cost-effective substitute for virgin oil. The Dem-Con Shingle Recycling Program requires participants to sign a supplier specification form.
The following are the specifications for delivery and materials that may be included in the load to be processed:
Transferred
• Acceptable items: asphalt shingles, incidental bundle wrappers (paper or plastic), incidental cardboard boxes, incidental cans and bottles, tar paper
• Non-acceptable items: C&D debris, wood, windows, dirt, MSW, cedar shakes, flat roofing, landscaping debris, rock, stone, metal, valley tin, roof vents, cardboard
Direct Haul
• Acceptable items: asphalt shingles, bundle wrappers (paper or plastic), cardboard boxes, incidental cans and bottles, tar paper, roof vents, eave and valley tin, metal, pallets
• Non-acceptable items: C&D debris, wood, windows, dirt, MSW, cedar shakes, flat roofing, landscaping debris, rock, stone
The company expects to recycle more than 25,000 tons of shingles this year.
Dem-Con Companies is comprised of four distinct divisions: Recovery & Recycling, Landfill, Shingle Processing and Green Fuels, an early stage R&D developing new methods to produce fuel for green power initiatives.
