Debris cleanup and demolition begins at former church site

Metals and wood were sorted on-site at the former Advent United Methodist Church in Five Forks, South Carolina.

Cleanup and demolition began at the site of a fire in Five Forks, South Carolina, a report by GreenvilleOnline says. The former Advent United Methodist Church was undergoing renovations when a fire destroyed the structure in February.

Crews cleaned up debris, sorted metals and woods and tore down the remaining walls of the facility in mid-May. The renovations of the 30-year-old building included an expansion of the existing sanctuary and a facility connecting it to an education building on the back of the property.  The church must now start from scratch on reconstruction.

According to the report, Pastor Michael Turner said waiting for the insurance company to determine if it was a total loss was a long process, and the congregation now must look at architect plants for the new church. Once the congregation approves a plan, construction can start.

Until then, Turner said in the report that the congregation has been meeting in the education building and that the fire did not slow down plans for mission trips or community projects.

The decision and constructed is expected to take between and year and a half to two years, the report says.

Turner said that if all goes to plan, the congregation will be in the new building by early 2019, a year and a half after the original expected completion date.
