CT Committee Nears Vote on C&D Operation

The Branford, CT Planning and Zoning Commission is nearing a vote on a proposed construction & demolition facility in the city. The commission will have to decide several issues. These include the following: Changing the zoning of the 18 acre lot from residential, which it is presently zoned for, to industrial; and determining whether or not to rewrite the code to allow different types of material to be processed at the location.

The company that is seeking to build the C&D project is Cherry Hill Construction. The company already has a C&D facility in North Branford, and, a spokesman for the company says that if built the new facility would primarily focus on green recycling (wood debris) and do very minimal amounts of concrete and asphalt processing.

The Planning and Zoning Commission has conducted two public hearings on the project, with the most recent held Dec. 1. It is expected to make a decision on the project by either January or February.

If built, the facility, which abuts a trailer park and an affordable housing complex, would have around 200 trucks a day making the trip to the facility.

According to local press reports opposition from residents surrounding the proposed site have come out strongly against the facility.
