Crews working on a bridge demolition near Little Rock, Arkansas, turned out to have more work than they had initially bargained for. The 93-year old Broadway Bridge set to be imploded Oct. 11 withstood the implosion.
According to the Associated Press, the severing of the steel arch and bridge deck should have taken about 30 seconds to bring down the structure. Instead crews worked for five hours to bring down the bridge which ironically was deemed structurally deficient. Crews attached a cable to the bridge and pulled it down.
According to the report, Arkansas highway department spokesman Danny Straessle says the blasts weakened the span, but parts of the bridge fell against themselves rather than into the Arkansas River.
Three other implosions are reportedly planned during a six-month project to bring down the old bridge and replace it.
