Demolition of fire-damaged building completed on the Fourth of July

Crews salvaged some materials from the Hanley Furniture building in Rockford, Illinois.

Demolition of the former Hanley Furniture building in Rockford, Illinois, was scheduled to be completed on the Fourth of July, a report by the Rockford Register Star says. The building was destroyed by a fire earlier in June.

According to a separate report, Northern Illinois Service Co. of Rockford was paid $500,000 for the demolition. The city received two estimates for the work, with Norther Illinois’ competitor exceeding $800,000. Building owner Justin Fern filed a request for a temporary restraining order in Winnebago County Court to stop the demolition, but Circuit Judge Eugene Doherty denied his request. The city will seek repayment from Fern for the demolition costs.

Northern Illinois began the demolition on June 30 with crews starting at the south wall of the fifth floor, the remaining wall on the top story. A brewery sign was taken down with the intentions of salvaging it, but the sign buckled in two spots while being lowered to the ground.

According to the report, the city said it was working with the demolition company to salvage other parts of the building as well, and the bricks from the demolition will be recycled.

Flames reignited several times during the demolition but were extinguished by crews on-site.
The lot will be converted to green space.
