The company in charge of capping a landfill in Newburyport, Mass., has to meet a number of requirements before it can begin trucking in demolition debris to do the job, according to a report in the Newburyport Current (Newburyport, Mass.).
The Suffolk Superior Court has issued an injunction outlining the procedures New Ventures must follow to complete the capping by Aug. 30, 2007.
The injunction includes a provision that the C&D material used to cap the landfill must not contain any gypsum, which has been linked by some to the generation of hydrogen sulfide gas if exposed to water in landfills, according to the report.
Other provisions include scheduling an installation of a fully enclosed flare system, a gas collection system and submitting for approval of a contract with a consultant to monitor the removal of gypsum.
