County officials from Northampton County, Pa., have initiated an investigation to uncover how 22 tons of demolition debris would up at Essroc Cement Corp. in Nazareth, Pa., according to a report in the Express-Times (Harrisburg, Pa.).
According to a police report, the debris came from a school that caught fire in Newark. A representative from the company notified police after discovering the material Dec. 17. The representative reported finding bricks, dirt, mortar, plastic, paper and unknown materials at the company’s plant.
Officials are unsure when the material was dumped.
The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection is conducting its own investigation, according to the report. The DEP’s solid waste office will investigate under the solid waste management act, which allows fines for illegal dumping.
