Costello Demolition, based in Middlesboro, Mass., was awarded the 2009 International Demolition Environmental & Recycling Award at an Amsterdam awards banquet earlier this month, according to the Demolition & Recycling International magazine. The awards were sponsored by Demolition & Recycling International in conjunction with the European Demolition Association.
According to Costello’s Web site, the company is “committed to recycling, and to diversion of materials from landfills and waste streams.” The company adds that it incorporates the residual value of the material into its projects.
“We like to pulverize and then crush concrete material onsite, and let the material stay on site as backfill,” says Costello Project Manager John Costello on the company’s Web site. “It saves trucking the material around which is not only costly but polluting – and all our customers are happy with the product we make.”
In addition, Costello Demolition offers green building consulting services. The company says it routinely achieves a 90 percent materials recycling rate for projects it undertakes, and also that it works closely with developers seeking LEED accreditation for their projects to ensure that environmentally conscious destruction methods are used.
The International Demolition Awards recognize demolition contractors for excellence in demolition best practices, health and safety, innovation in demolition techniques and environmental responsibility. Awards are given in 12 categories.
