Three contractors working on two separate bridge demolition projects for the Oregon Department of Transportation’s (ODOT) State Bridge Delivery Program have coordinated their efforts to keep nearly 30,000 cubic yards of demolition debris out of landfills.
Contractor Holm II Inc., Stayton, Ore., and subcontractor Goodfellow Brothers of Wenatchee, Wash., had demolished several bridges to make way for new construction. The rubble from these projects generated roughly 30,000 cubic yards of material.
At the same time, Ross Brothers of Salem, Ore., needed nearly 40,000 cubic yards of embankment material for use beneath four bridges and to widen the Springfield-Creswell Highway and Interstate 5 interchange.
The contractors agreed to exchange the material at no cost, allowing Holm II and Goodfellow Brothers to avoid disposal fees and Ross to avoid purchasing fill.
The bridge program is a statewide effort to repair or replace some 300 aging bridges in state over the next decade.
