Two companies contracted to renovate the Monterey County Courthouse in Salinas, Calif., have been accused of disregarding safety warnings and unleashing asbestos into the building’s ventilation system, according to a report in the Monterey Herald (Monterey, Calif.).
Eight felonies and five misdemeanors have been filed against Nova Partners Inc., headquartered in Palo Alto, Calif., and Skanska USA Building Inc., which is headquartered in Parsippany, N.J.
The charges accuse the companies of disposal and storage of asbestos at an unauthorized site, reckless disposal and storage of a hazardous waste resulting in risk or injury, failure to take safety precautions and reckless emission of air contaminants, which endanger the public, according to the report.
