A Hadly, Massachusetts-based contractor is accused of illegally dumping more than 100 yards of concrete debris along the Connecticut River in Northampton, Massachusetts, a report by the Daily Hampshire Gazette says.
The Department of Environmental Protection issued an order against Christopher J. Baj of Hadley Concrete Service, the report says. The issue alleges that Baj violated the state’s solid waste, wetland and waterways laws and requires Baj to hire a consultant to develop cleanup and restoration plans to remove the debris by Aug. 31.
The rubble allegedly came from the demolition and reconstruction of a sidewalk and structures that Baj was working on, the report says. Baj’s attorney told the Gazette that his client does not even own a dump truck.
The report says that another company, Meehan Concrete/Construction, Westhampton, Massachusetts, was directed to transport the debris and take it to Valley Recycling. The DEP did not impose any fines on Baj, but he could face fines of up to $25,000 and $50,000 for not complying with the department’s conditions, according to the report.
