Coming Clean

Pa. cleanup effort removes tons of debris from illegal dumpsites.

The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has announced that 1.2 tons of residential and construction debris has been removed from an illegal dumpsite this fall in Gallitzin State Forest, Cambria and Indiana counties, as part of the state’s Forest Land’s Beautification Program, according to a release from the department.

Department Secretary Michael DiBerardinis says that an earlier cleanup in May 2004 resulted in the removal of more than 20 tons of material from the site, calling it “one of this year’s Dirty Dozen dumpsites.”

A total of 15 volunteers have worked more than 52 hours to remove the debris from illegal dumpsites in three Pennsylvania counties, according to the release.

More than 300 illegal dumpsites have been identified throughout the state, according to the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. More than 240 sites have been cleaned up through the efforts of volunteers and contractors, resulting in the removal of more than 2,800 tons of residential debris, nearly 28,000 tires, 400 tons of scrap metal and 660 tons of concrete, according to the release.
