The former Colorado State University (CSU) football stadium in Fort Collins is slated for demolition, a report by The Denver Post says. The university System Board of Governors plan to sell or lease the 160-acre property.
CSU attempted to repurpose Hughes Stadium, but discovered that bringing the 32,500-seat structure up to code would cost tens of millions of dollars, the report says. A concrete subsidence and major construction failure would need to be addressed along with the systems necessary to operate a stadium of that size.
Icon Venue Group, the Denver-based outside consulting firm for CSU, recommended demolition on deconstruction over rehabilitation to attract potential developers, the report says.
Demolition should take nine to 14 months and cost $4 million to $6 million. The report says CSU expects to enter negotiations with potential buyers in the spring and will dictate price once the type of project is further developed.
The CSU football team used Hughes Stadium for 49 seasons.
