The city of Boulder, Colorado, cleared one of its oldest structures for demolition, a report by the Daily Camera says. It will be replaced by a three-story mixed use development.
According to the report, Boulder’s Landmarks Board approved the demolition May 3, but the construction on the new development can’t begin until the city’s Planning Board approves it.
The 40-foot-tall replacement will include a restaurant, a retail store, offices and housing, the report says. It’s still not clear what companies will be housed in the development.
The building has been around since the 1800s, with a portion of it used as the Garbarino Saloon in 1883. In was also known as the People’s Meat Market and a sundries store in 1910. In the 1930s, the building housed a gas station, then auto shops until the early 1940s. Before closing, the building housed the Old Chicago pizza restaurant chain.
It has been remodeled several times, but not within the last several decades, the report says. Because of this, the building has been described by property owner Philip Day as “decrepit.”
