A coal hopper at the closed Georgia Power plant in Milledgeville, Georgia, was demolished through a controlled implosion over the weekend, a report by WMAZ says. The Plant Branch building came down at 8 a.m. Oct. 28.
The coal hopper fed coal directly into the energy production process, the report says. It was functioning from 1965 to 2015.
The implosion was the second at the site in the last two months and is part of Georgia Power’s plan to dismantle the entire site. Holly Crawford, Georgia Power spokesperson, says in the report that environmental concerns caused the company to close the aging plant.
Georgia Power will keep the property once it’s cleared and says it is not yet sure what will happen with the land.
