Massachusetts’s Chelsea Center for Recycling and Economic Development, a long-time proponent of recycling, including C&D recycling, is reportedly shuttering its operations effective June 30, 2003.
The center, which for nearly the past decade has funded research into market development for recycled products, had been supported by the state of Massachusetts. However, like many states, Massachusetts is now in a budget crunch and has reportedly chosen not to fund the Center in fiscal year 2004.
According to Michael Dimino, interim director of the center, “Despite a generous offer from the Chancellor of UMass Lowell to continue staff support through fiscal year 2004 at half the fiscal year 2003 rate, we have been unable to secure adequate additional public or private funding in order to maintain a meaningful program.”
It is expected that the Lowell Center for Sustainable Production at UMass Lowell will support the organization’s Web site [www.chelseacenter.org], publications and library resources, and that they will be housed and supported on campus.
Among the products offered through the www.chelseacenter.org Web site are the 2003 edition of the “Massachusetts Directory of Recycled Products Manufacturers” and the 2003 edition of the “Massachusetts Guide to Services for the Recycling Industry.”
