CDRA announces 2016 award winners

Awardees were honored during C&D World.

The Construction & Demolition Recycling Association (CDRA), Milwaukee, has announced it’s the honorees for its 2016 awards. The awards will be distributed at C&D World, the association’s annual meeting, May 1-3, in San Jose, California.

James Taylor Jr., chairman, Taylor Montgomery LLC, Montgomery, New York, has been inducted into the C&D Hall of Fame. Taylor, who oversees the Taylor Recycling Facility and Taylor Biomass, was honored for his long work in the industry, his vision for the future of C&D recycling, his company’s long record of local community service, and for his service to the CDRA, of which he is a past president.

Taylor founded Taylor Biomass Energy LLC in 2005 as part of his family’s business commitment to waste reduction, recycling and reuse. He built the first of these businesses, Taylor Tree, Inc. his father’s business founded in 1956 into one of the Hudson Valley’s largest land clearing and tree service companies. Jim is an industry visionary with the practical contracting experience to manage projects of any complexity.

Taylor Recycling Facility, LLC disposes of wood from other businesses and is a leading recycler of C&D debris. The company’s reputation grew exponentially after the firm’s around-the-clock work for nine months at the Fresh Kills Landfill sorting debris from the Sept. 11, 2001 World Trade Center attacks. Taylor received a commendation from the Army Corps of Engineers’ lead contractor for the company’s “tremendous contribution”. This project was completed in less time than expected and under budget, and with the highest degree of performance.

“Jim Taylor exemplifies what is best in the C&D industry,” says Kevin Herb, CDRA president and managing partner, Broad Run Recycling, Manassas, Virginia. “His innovative vision on the C&D recycling industry’s needs, his service to the local community, and his guidance of the CDRA during a dynamic time for the organization sets an example of exemplary actions for the industry.”

Landfill Reduction and Recycling, Appleton, Wisconsin, was awarded 2016 C&D Recycler of the Yearfor its innovative public/private partnership with Dane County, Wisconsin, which includes the city of Madison. The company signed an agreement with the county and then proceeded to build a modern mixed C&D recycling facility in the area. Its management are considered C&D recycling experts in the state, serving on nonprofit boards, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) advisory boards and conducting numerous educational presentations relating to C&D recycling, for the WDNR and city and county waste programs.

Landfill Reduction has also developed unique end markets by processing its own vinyl siding into flake and processing drywall into a spreadable soil amendment. Landfill Reduction’s wood markets have been diverse, selling to multiple industrial boilers, the landscape mulch market, animal bedding, and erosion control products. Other unique products recycled include electronics, tires, ceiling tiles, ridged plastics, plastic film, lead acid batteries.

Michael Gross, Zanker Recycling, San Jose, California, was awarded the CDRA Member of the Year award. Gross has been very active on the board of directors of both the CDRA and the Recycling Certification Institute, as well as being closely involved in the planning for the 2016 C&D World. Gross is well known national in the C&D industry, especially in California.

The President's Award was given to L&S Demo Recycling, Conshohocken, Pennsylvania. L&S Demo Recycling is a 1,000 ton per day, C&D transfer station and recycling center.
