Canadian Province Considers C&D Recycling Plan

Alberta government and industry groups announce development of deposit-refund system.

In an attempt to reduce the amount of construction and demolition (C&D) debris sent to landfills, the government of Alberta, Canada, and industry groups have announced the development of a program that would require companies to pay for not recycling C&D material, according to a report in the Calgary Herald (Calgary, Alberta, Canada.).

Details for the plan are still under consideration, including the cost structure and how the program will be enforced. The basic plan would require contractors to submit a waste management plan and deposit when applying for building permits. The amount of the deposit that would be refunded is based on how much C&D material the company diverts from landfills, according to the report.

Currently, less than 10 per cent of C&D debris is diverted from Alberta’s landfills.
