Canadian recycler Halifax C&D Recycling Ltd. has received $67,000 in funding from the Resource Recovery Fund Board of Nova Scotia to help it purchase equipment to process asphalt shingles, according to a report in the Chronicle Herald (Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada).
The company developed a process for separating sand and asphalt of shingles from the paper portion in 2005, according to the report. The resulting product is used by Ocean Contractors in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, in hot mix asphalt paving.
One of the company’s owners, Dan Chaissie, tells the Chronicle Herald that the sand-asphalt product replaces 2 to 3 percent of the new liquids in hot mix.
The funding from the RRFB contributed to $75,000 of equipment at Halifax C&D Recycling, according to the report. Funds are also available for research studies or pilot projects that divert waste materials.
