Canadian City Planning Commission Approves C&D Project

The London, Ontario City Council will hear comments on project at meeting later this month.

The London, Ontario Planning Commission has given the approval to Sunbelt Business Centre Inc. to build a construction and demolition facility in the city.

The decision, made during the commission’s meeting, earlier this week, recommended that the acting general manager of planning and development request that the Municipal City Council, at their next meeting, June 28, amend the zoning laws to allow for the facility to be built.

While giving tacit approval to the construction facility, the commission did say that it would be accepting comments from businesses and residents in the surrounding area.

Last month the London Municipal Council deleted and referred back to the Planning Committee the Acting General Manager of Planning and Development’s recommendation to amend Zoning Bylaw No. Z-1 to change the zoning of the subject lands to permit a construction and demolition recycling facility to give further consideration as to whether or not the City wishes to use this property for the requested purposes.

Planning Staff have further reviewed the request and discussed related concerns with London- Economic Development Commissions’ staff. Our position to support the zoning amendment for a construction and demolition recycling facility has not changed. However, a recommendation has been added to incorporate public concerns into the city’s response to the Ministry of Environment regarding the application for a Certificate of Approval. This will ensure that the Ministry is aware of all concerns and will enforce measures to mitigate potential impacts the operation may create.

In giving the go-ahead the council set as a limit 100 metric tons of construction and demolition waste a day.

Further requirements include: proper buffering, landscaping and fencing.
