Caltrans performs test blasts for upcoming Bay Bridge pier implosions

Implosions scheduled for Oct. 15 and 29.

Crews from the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) conducted a test blast on Oct. 7 for the upcoming implosions to remove the piers remaining from the old Bay Bridge, according to a report from the local CBS affiliate.

The purpose of the rehearsal was to make sure everything is ready for the implosion of Pier E5 which is expected to take place at 11:30 a.m. Oct. 15.

The same “bubble curtain” method will be used to implode the pier as was used in November 2015. The method to absorb the shockwave created from the blast created from hundreds of small explosives placed within the concrete.

The implosion of Pier E4 is scheduled for the same time on for Saturday, Oct. 29. CBS says after the October implosions, 13 remaining pier structures that will need to be removed. Six are slated to be removed next fall and the remaining piers will be removed in 2018.
