The City Council of Union City, Calif., has approved a green building ordinance, according to a report in Inside Bay Area (Oakland, Calif.).
The ordinance requires all city-sponsored construction to meet green building standards certified by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), according to the report.
Buildings constructed in the city as a partnership between a private developer and a public agency will be required to include as many green building features as feasible—such as energy-saving techniques and producing less waste from construction—but no certification will be required.
