California Recycler Wants in on Asphalt Production

Owner of Escondido asphalt recycling facility submits plans for production plant.

The owner of an Escondido, Calif., asphalt recycling company has submitted plans to the city to add a production plant, according to a report in the North County Times (Escondido, Calif.).

George Weir, owner of Escondido Sand & Gravel, has proposed to add a production plant to his mobile asphalt recycling facility to produce asphalt for use on local projects, according to the report.

Weir tells the North County Times that the mobile asphalt production plant would include a 40-foot silo and produce about 500 tons of asphalt per day using a large amount of recycled materials from Sand & Gravel’s current operations.

The paper reports that North County, Calif., residents have traditionally been hostile to similar proposals. Los Angeles-based Vulcan Materials Co. lost a bid for a plant in Escondido in 2003, according to the report.

Weir argues that a local asphalt production plant is a necessity and that highways are currently clogged with trucks trying to haul asphalt in for local projects.
