Calif. City Adopts C&D Salvage Ordinance

Willits, Calif., has adopted an ordinance that requires the salvaging of building materials following construction, demolition or remodeling projects, according to a report in the Willits News (Willits, Calif.).

For demolition work, 50 percent of debris tonnage, including concrete and asphalt, and 15 percent, excluding concrete and asphalt, must be salvaged, according to the report.

In construction work, 50 percent of all debris tonnage must be salvaged.

The ordinance was modeled on similar regulations developed by the nearby city of Atherton. Modified for Willits by Mendocino Solid Waste Authority Director Mike Sweeney, the ordinance applies to demolition projects on buildings that measure 500 square feet or larger and to new construction projects for buildings 5,000 square feet or larger, the Willits News reports.
