C&D Recycler Uses 24-Hour Dust Control

Cooper Tank Transfer runs DustBoss DB-30 six days a week.

Cooper Tank Transfer, a solid waste handling equipment manufacturer and construction and demolition recycler, based in Brooklyn, N.Y., has employed an around-the-clock dust suppression system at its 40,000-square-foot facility in Brooklyn. The site processes around 1,300 tons of construction and demolition debris per day, according to the company.

The company mounted an oscillating dust control unit on a stationary I-beam, about 20 feet off the ground, according to a company press release. The equipment has been running 24 hours a day, six days a week, for over a year, delivering dust management to protect workers, commercial neighbors and the surrounding environment, the company adds.

“In our operations, huge quantities of dust can be released in just a few seconds when trucks are dumping or front loaders are transporting material,” says Ray Kvedaras, general manager of Cooper Tank.  “We wanted to find a technique that would address the problem in the immediate area, right as it was occurring.”

As a result, the company bought a DustBoss DB-30, which generates 9,200 CFM of air movement and features brass nozzles that atomize the water supply to droplets between 50 and 200 microns for maximum particle attraction, according to the release.

“Another benefit of the DustBoss is that it doesn’t soak the conveyor or debris pile the way manual spraying does,” says Kvedaras. “Too much water can cause the screens to block up with a mucky residue, which complicates processing and increases maintenance,” he said.

The Brooklyn site processes more than 400,000 tons of C&D waste per year and about 80% of its intake is recycled to beneficial uses, according to the company.
