A construction and demolition firm, Greencycle/Grillo, headquartered in Milford, Ct., has proposed using empty space adjacent to a landfill as the site to deposit C&D material shipped from throughout the state of Connecticut.
Mike Grillo, with Greencycle/Grillo, says the space is 15 acres, and needs to be filled. The company proposed depositing a host of inorganic materials such as brick, mortar, concrete and shingles in the site.
The proposed facility could generate as much as $27 million for the city if enough material is shipped to the site.
While the company has been working with the local community on the project since late last year, the company hopes to submit its proposal to the Connecticut DEP this year.
Grillo says the project would alternate layers of C&D material and topsoil at the site. Further, he notes that the site would not be taking in any material contaminated with asbestos.
While the company feels that its project has an excellent chance of going forward, according to local press reports opposition to the site has surfaced. According to local press reports, some local residents have been soliciting support against the project since late last month.
An article in the Torrington (Connecticut) Register Citizen noted that opponents to the project hope to submit petitions against the project to the board of selectmen May 6.
