C&D Landfill Nearing Capacity in Florida

Wakulla County landfill will run out of room by the end of the year, officials say.

The construction and demolition debris landfill in Wakulla County, Fla., will reach its capacity by the end of the year, officials say, according to a report in the Tallahassee Democrat (Tallahassee, Fla.).

County commissioners are considering many options that will be discussed when they meet again on Nov. 7. Among the choices being considered is a plan to expand the current landfill by 2 acres at an estimated cost of $1.5 million.

Commissioners are also considering buying land in another location in the county to build a landfill that won’t require a liner.

According to the report, a third option under consideration is stopping accepting C&D debris altogether. Public Works officials have suggested the county put out bins for construction companies to deposit material into at an extra cost of $50 per ton. The C&D would then be mixed in with the counties municipal solid waste and taken to the landfill in Jackson County.
