C&D Landfill Expansion Stalls in Illinois

Board considers seeking expert opinion.

Plans to expand Will County, Ill., construction and demolition debris landfill have stalled over the issue of whether to hire a landfill expert to review the proposal, according to a report in Southtown Today (Tinley Park, Ill.).

According to the report, Waste Management officials have been promoting a plan for the last two years to expand the landfill, which accepts special material including C&D debris but not residential garbage.

The company has offered to spend $23 million to cap a nearby pile of gypsum in exchange for the expansion project.

Company officials have said hiring a consultant to examine its proposal is unnecessary, according to the report.

If county approval is obtained for the project, Waste Management will then have to apply to the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency for additional permits.
