Construction and demolition debris makes up 93 percent of the material recycled in DeKalb County, Ill., helping the county achieve a 51 percent recycling rate—above and beyond the state-mandated 25 percent, according to a report in the Midweek (DeKalb, Ill.).
“If you remove the construction and demolition debris, a 43 percent recycling rate has been achieved,” Pat Dashney, solid waste coordinator, tells the Midweek. “These two percentages exceed the state’s 25 percent recycling goal, and we recognize the commitment of the county residents and business have made.”
More than 88,240 tons of material was deposited through Waste Management in the county landfill in 2004, according to the report. In addition, 5,071 came from outside of the county.
