A state agency has issued an order against Waste Management of Massachusetts Inc. to bar the company from accepting construction debris at a landfill in Springfield, Mass., because of reports of gaseous odors, according to a report in the Republican (Springfield, Mass.).
The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) issued the order after hydrogen sulfide vapors led to complaints from neighboring businesses and office buildings. Several cases of nausea, headaches and vomiting as a result of exposure to the odors were also reported.
According to the report, the company has taken steps to address the problem and was deemed in substantial compliance during an inspection on Jan. 11.
It is unknown when the company will be allowed to resume accepting construction and demolition debris, pending review and approval of a new operations plan, according to the report.
