Boston Considers Green Construction Requirements

City officials to require green building standards on projects greater than 50,000 square feet.

Boston could become the first major U.S. city to require developers to follow green building standards on projects of 50,000 square feet or more, according to a report in the Boston Globe.

According to the report, city officials have announced that they will ask the Boston Redevelopment Authority to incorporate the green building standards into municipal zoning. The standards are expected to be formally adopted by the zoning commission in January following a public comment period.

However, the Boston standards will not require the buildings achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, but its own set of standards, according to the report.
