The 81,500 square-foot building, which sits on the 27-acre BD Biosciences campus, opened in June 2008 after being reengineered and refurbished. More than 90 percent of materials demolished during the $27 million project were recycled. Overall the building is projected to use 20 percent less energy, and 200,000 gallons per year less water, than a comparable building in
BD achieved points towards LEED Silver Certification for pollution control and diversion during construction, energy efficiency (mechanical and lighting), occupant comfort, ergonomics, green housekeeping, water use reduction (with landscaping and automatic restrooms), storage and collection of recyclables, indoor air quality, environmental tobacco smoke control, and low-emitting materials (paints, coatings and carpet systems).
