Bayshore Recycling, Woodbridge Township, New Jersey, received the 2014 Outstanding Corporate Citizen Award from the New Jersey League of Municipalities (NJLM) Educational Foundation and Sustainable Jersey, at two separate luncheon ceremonies held on Nov. 18 and 20 in conjunction with the 99th NJLM Conference in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

As a recipient of the award, Bayshore was recognized for its substantial contributions and support of these organizations. For 20 years, Bayshore has been recycling and reintroducing materials into the economic mainstream while reducing the volume of material deposited in New Jersey’s landfills, says NJLM. Energy conservation and renewable energy also are part of the company’s corporate vision of operating 100 percent green businesses powered 100 percent by renewable energy.

“We are so honored to receive this prestigious award from the League, the preeminent voluntary association representing New Jersey’s 565 municipalities with distinction since 1915,” Valerie Montecalvo, Bayshore’s President says. “The League’s partnership with Sustainable Jersey (SJ) has achieved tremendous success. The fact that 75 percent of New Jersey’s municipalities now participate in the program is amazing. The newest program to expand the SJ model to the 2,500 public schools represents a new and very exciting frontier, particularly as our young people represent the next generation and our hope for a more sustainable future. It is so important that we continue to educate our communities on greener, more sustainable living practices as we strive toward achievement of a more sustainable state for our 8.9 million residents.”

Beyond the day-to-day management of the 55-acre recycling company, Montecalvo and senior members of the Bayshore staff sit on the boards of directors or management teams of 14 external organizations at the national, state, county and local levels, as well as in the nonprofit community.

As an example, Montecalvo has served as president of the Construction & Demolition Recycling Association for the past two years. Gary Sondermeyer, vice president of Bayshore operations, leads SJ’s Waste Management Task Force, which has contributed to SJ’s certification actions.

Bayshore operates seven recycling businesses, all located on a 55-acre site in Woodbridge Township. Services include: recycling of concrete, asphalt, brick, block and glass cullet into aggregate materials; remediation of petroleum contaminated soils; materials recovery of mixed construction and demolition debris into secondary products such as landscaping mulch and bio-fuel; full-service metal recycling; recycling of consumer, and acceptance of dredge material via barge. The company was featured as the cover story in the November/December 2013 issue of Construction & Demolition Recycling.
