Axion builds walkway out of recycled plastics for western Ohio park

Wetlands walkway project near Dayton, Ohio, funded by recycling grant.

walkway recycled plastics parkAxion International Holdings Inc., Zanesville, Ohio, a leader in recycled plastic and polymer composite technologies used to produce Ecotrax rail ties/sleepers and Struxure building products, has announced that the Centerville-Washington Park District used the company’s Struxure commercial boardwalk products to recently complete a wetlands walkway project at Oak Creek South Park near Dayton, Ohio.

The park district used large profile 7-inch-by-9-inch Struxure timbers in the substructure and small profile 1-inch-by-8-inch gray embossed surface boards to build an approximate 100-foot-long walkway and observation deck in the western Ohio public park. The Centerville-Washington Park District received a Buy-Recycle Grant from the Montgomery County (Ohio) Solid Waste District that will reimburse 100 percent of the material cost for the boardwalk project.

Ken Carter, park operations manager for Centerville-Washington Park District, says, “The Axion products were as easy, if not easier to work with than traditional lumber products. We were able to complete our boardwalk project in half the time as we would have using wood products, and we don’t have to worry about future replacement costs due to decaying wood.”

“The boardwalk combines Struxure timbers as sleepers and joists in addition to new high performance surface boards to create a structural composite system that is ideal for parks and recreation projects,” says Axion Executive Vice President for Building Products Dave Crane. “Our prior work with Logan County Ohio on the Onion Ditch Vehicular Bridge led to an introduction with the Ohio Parks and Recreation Association. We are extremely excited about the opportunities presented in Ohio for our recycled materials used on bridges and park trails around the state.”

Struxure commercial boardwalk systems are made from recycled material and are engineered using a patented recycled structural composite (RSC) formula, making them strong, durable, long-lasting and resistant to rot, fungi, insects and moisture, without splintering or crumbling, the company says.
