Several manufacturing companies in Oregon have started to use asphalt shingles to produce new asphalt. Two Oregon companies ¨C Hooker Creek Companies and River Bend Sand and Gravel will be taking in shingles from manufacturers in the state.
One source said that the asphalt shingles taken in will come from industrial sources, and not from demolition projects. A big advantage of using the shingles is the ability to access the oil-based material. According to local press reports a new recycling facility in Salem, Ore., will be taking in the material.
According to one news report, Hooker Creek recycled around 70,000 tons of old asphalt last year.
The Oregon Department of Transportation uses about 30 percent recycled asphalt in its pavement. But use of asphalt shingle material is not standard and still must be approved by the transportation department.
