Major asphalt recycling project topic of Feb. 11 webinar

Trio of associations urge members to learn more about recycling aspects of Interstate 64 project in Virginia.

The Pavement Preservation & Recycling Alliance (PPRA) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) are presenting a webinar covering recycling aspects of a major highway project in Virginia on Thursday, Feb. 11, as part of a webinar series on pavement recycling.

The Glen Ellyn, Illinois-based PPRA is receiving support for the webinar series from the Asphalt Reclaiming and Recycling Association (ARRA), the Asphalt Emulsion Manufacturers Association (AEMA) and the International Slurry Surfacing Association (ISSA).

Between 2016 and 2019, the Virginia Department of Transportation completed the reconstruction and widening of a seven-mile portion of Interstate 64 near Williamsburg, Virginia. The work was completed using a combination of full depth reclamation (FDR) and cold central plant recycling (CCPR), says PPRA, which calls it “the largest recycling project in North America completed to date,” as it incorporated more than 500,000 tons of recycled material.

In addition to the recycling work, researchers from the Virginia Transportation Research Council and the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute installed sensors within the pavement layers so the performance of the section could be measured while under live traffic. The Feb. 11 webinar will summarize the pavement design, instrumentation methods and preliminary results of the sensor findings, says PPRA.
