The Asheville Art Museums in Asheville, North Carolina, is set to begin demolishing the “core” of its building within a few weeks, a report by WLOS says. The museum plans to replace the building with an expanded space.
The building’s new layout is designed to be more transparent and provide more space for works of art that couldn’t fit into the gallery before, the report says. The front of the building will add a light display to attract attention at night.
Construction of the museum is expected to cost $18 million and take 18 months, according to the report. During construction, the museum’s art will be stored in sister locations in the Southeast area of the city.
Demolition of the building is expected to take two months. Construction plans still need approval from city officials.
